A couple of weeks ago we received an email from a farmer thanking us for our service and mentioning she had increased her total milk turnover to 45 lts from 25lt and was working on reaching a total yield of 100lt daily by 2015.
So we called her.
Rachel is the proud owner of 5 Friesians. These include 3 heifers, one first calver, and two older cows. She lives in Nyahururu Kenya and has recently retired from her work and is now concentrating on farming. She joined iCow on 15th June 2011. Thus she has been on the iCow platform almost since the day we started! (June 3rd 2011)
During a recent interview she told Beth from iCow Customer Care that she no longer has to take money out of her pocket to subsidise her farming activities. She has increased her milk yields and is able to pay her farm helper as well as invest in building her cow housing and now sees farming as a good income generating activity.
Over the period she has been using iCow Rachel has increased her production of animal feed including napier and lucerne. She has also improved hygiene and sees that this has resulted in healthier animals and improved yields. One cow Shalom has increased milk from 10-12 to 18 litres, another Chania has just produced a calf and is already producing 17lts! She expects Chania to produce between 20-25 lt during her second lactation, and chuckles as she says the cows are now competing !
Rachel takes the information she recieves from iCow seriously and is implementing as much as she can including returning nutrients from her cow manure to her soil after it has gone through her bio digester.
Cows Shalom, Chania, Trooper and new baby calf Dotcom (now on the iCow calf calendar) are greeted every morning by Rachel who proudly tells us this is the first thing she does every morning. This has enabled her detect and manage illness and disease at very early stages and thus take the appropriate timely action. We are sure her cows look forward to her every visit!
Definitely a digital farmer, Rachel encouraged the iCow team to sign up for "Whatsapp" and then the proud farmer sent us 5 lovely pictures of herself with her prized animals.
We are thrilled by her successess on iCow.
Rachel also keeps chickens but tells us she struggles to keep them alive when young due to disease. When she heard that iCow also has tools to help farmers with chickens, she said she will subscribe to them straight away.
We are certainly looking forward to the stories she will share with us about her chickens................and hopefully pictures too!
